Charlotte Area Farm Tour

On Sunday, my friend Chloe and I headed out to the third annual Charlotte Area Farm Tour.  It was both our first times attending and we were excited to actually see the farm where our CSA veggies grow.

We started off at Laughing Owl Farm, where we had a lunch of barbecue and barbecue slaw.  It was pretty tasty, but I’m partial to my grandfather’s barbecue.

It’s THE BEST in my book.

Laughing Owl grows veggies,…

…has ducks,

…chickens and pigs.  I actually didn’t see any pigs and am wondering if that might have something to do with the barbecue (?).

Chloe and I were just about to leave, when I heard someone call my name.

It was Keia!

Keia was featured two months ago in my I’m a Runner series, but we’ve never actually met in person.  It was so fun to actually meet her! She’s just as bubbly and nice in person as she is on her blog.  I love it when people who are awesome on the Internet turn out to be awesome in real life. 🙂

Chloe and I left Laughing Owl to visit our CSA farm, Cold Water Creek Farm. After getting a bit lost due to my inability to read a map, we finally arrived.

The work horse

I think this tractor does most of the heavy work.

Chloe with some sort of farm equipment

This must be an indication of what will show up in our CSA share this week.

Peppers, pepper, and peppers

Red okra, green okra, and eggplant

Colorful Swish Chard in the green house

Black eyed peas drying for easy storage

Our favorite farmer, Eric, explaining the greenhouse

Interesting farm equipment

We took a trip walk down the street to visit the fields.

Greens!

While Eric explained more details of farming to us, Chloe said this was my chance to destroy the tatsoi, which was my least favorite veggie this year.

Don’t worry, I didn’t harm the tatsoi.  I’ve made peace with it by throwing it in my smoothies.

One of my favorite parts of the farm tour was meeting Cameron, the cattle dog.

She was quite a ham — so funny! But I’m sure this gets a bit old for Eric.

More veggies…

Eggplant

Can you believe this is the red okra plant?

Gorgeous!

Peppers

Chloe and I made Eric pose for photos with us by his shiny tractor

Take two

Then we went to go meet the The Tiny Chef, Susanne.  Susanne is a personal chef and a good friend of Eric and his farming partner Brad.

…not my Brad, although I can totally picture Brad in overalls with a pitch fork. 🙂

Susanne came out to cook some tasty food with some of the farm’s offerings.

I had a bit of her yummy okra and tomatoes, cooked in a bit of olive oil before getting back in the car to head south towards Charlotte.

I <3 Farms.

Have you visited any local farms in your area?
