Newk’s

Last night I had the opportunity to try out a new casual restaurant in Uptown Charlotte, only a few blocks from where I live.  I wandered by Newk’s a few weeks ago and wondered what it was.  It hadn’t opened at the time and there was no indication what kind of business it was.  So when the person who handles their marketing tweeted that they had passes left for their 3-night pre-opening dinner party, I jumped on the opportunity to try it out.

My friend Jessica, agree to go with me because who doesn’t love hanging out with me free food.  😉

We were greeted warmly at the door and handed $20 Newk’s bucks to spend on dinner.

Their scaled-down menu for the event still had plenty of options including 4-5 different choices each of pizzas, sandwiches, and salads.

Jessica got the shrimp po-boy with Sunchips.  She really liked that the shrimp was grilled, not fried.  I’m a big fan of grilled versus fried too.

I was craving red meat, which is very unlike me.  But I went with it and ordered the black and bleu salad.

The salad was huge and had romaine, red onion, cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced steak, bleu cheese, and walnuts.  So yummy.  I took my best stab at it and managed to eat about 3/4 of it.

Because Newk’s was celebrating their opening, the wait staff was passing around slices of chocolate cake.  Jess and I took note of this immediately.  Someone passed us with cake when we were first starting our meal, but skipped over us.  We speculated we hadn’t eaten enough of our meal to have earned our cake.

Once we were done, we started eying the wait staff, but by then, no one was passing out cake.  🙁

What’s two cake-loving girls to do?

Ask and you shall receive.

We flagged down a server and asked if they were going to pass out any more cake.  She promptly granted our wish.

Cake: the best part of any meal.

Newk’s was a great experience.  I love casual restaurants that also focus on serving excellent food.

Plus, who can complain when there is cake?
