Can you wear black & brown together?

A reader recently asked me a question about color combining:

Can you wear black and brown together?

My initial reaction was “No” because when I think of black and brown, I think black and dark brown.  Of course, if you like wearing black and brown together, that’s your prerogative.  Personal preference is way more important than some blogger’s obscure fashion rules.

But the more I thought about her question, I realized that I do like to pair brown and black together, but only under one circumstance…

…when the brown is camel, not dark brown.  Some of you may disagree, but I like camel + black.

In my opinion, black needs something a bit lighter to contrast against it, like camel.

Brad and I had a little date night on Friday night and I wanted to wear something casual, but could still be appropriate for a nice restaurant. Customshop is anything but pretentious and dressy, but I actually enjoy “dressing” for dinner.

I paired a black bubble top (I call it this because really bubbles out in a shapeless way if you don’t use a belt) with a pleated camel colored skirt.  A leather belt tied the two pieces together.  My simple light camel colored sandals that match anything and everything were an easy shoe choice.

Black and brown (or black and camel, in my case) might not be for everyone, but it’s a color pairing that I really like.

Now that I answered a question, I have a question for you…

What do you think of high buns? Matronly or chic? They’re an easy solution for me when my hair is dirty and I have no time to wash it, but I can never quite decide if it makes me look old fashioned.
